Forks, knives, and spoons are cool and all but when you’re roughing it that’s a lot of extra things to bring along. Simplify things and opt for a camping “spork.”

Camping sporks lined up
The sporks in this review, in all their glory (or not)

Why do I put “spork” in quotes you ask? Because lots of the utensils I’m reviewing here aren’t actually sporks if we’re being technical. In fact, only one of them is. But there’s not a good term for a multi-purpose utensil other than “spork” so from hereon out I will use “spork” interchangeably and without quotes. Now let’s get back to business.

I own several of the leading spork products in the camping / backpacking world, so I figured you might want my experience if you’re trying to figure out which one to buy. Fret not, I’m here to guide you and get that food to your piehole. Also, if you’re looking for a cheap stocking stuffer idea these products would fit that bill perfectly.

humangear GoBites Uno

This is a quality instrument. Some serious thought and design must have been pumped into this spork. First and foremost, these things feel sturdy. The crease in the handle and the thickness of the plastic (or metal for the titanium version) makes this thing feel like a tank. The humangear GoBites Uno plastic version is by far the most popular model, but for those looking for something a little sturdier you might opt for the titanium version.

The humangear GoBites Uno in both titanium and plastic. The titanium is far better than the plastic, but also costs more.

As far as how the spork functions – it’s great. The fork prongs poke and hold food pretty well, though not as good as the fork prongs on the UCO Utility Spork. However the spoon on this thing is great – deep enough for slurping cereal milk or soup broth. The fork also has a beveled edge that can function as a rudimentary cutting device. Knife might be a stretch – it’s duller than a butter knife. But well-applied pressure will cut your fruits, veggies, cheese, and other foods albeit unevenly. The knife function is mediocre on the plastic version, but much improved on the titanium version. If you’re looking to chop, go titanium. If that’s not important to you, then ignore this feedback.

This is a great utensil but I feel like a major weakness is its length. If you’re backpacking and eating directly out of backpacker meal bags, it’s a bit short. You will inevitably get food on your knuckles when using this. As such, I’ve stopped bringing this utensil backpacking. But it makes a great utensil for car camping, picnics, or lunch in the office. I also wouldn’t hesitate to throw the titanium version into my SHTF kit because that thing is a tank and will outlast numerous generations. If you’re not a backpacker, then you can’t go wrong with the humangear GoBites Uno. But if you’re looking for a backpacking utensil, keep reading.

UCO Utility Spork

This thing is very similarly designed to the humangear GoBites Uno. I won’t dive heavily into the features since they’re so similar – spoon, fork, and cutting edge. The spoon is on par with the humangear GoBites Uno. However the fork on the UCO Utility Spork is far superior at grabbing food than the humangear. The prongs are sharper and longer. They actually feel pretty “sharp” at the points compared to the humangear. Further, the cutting edge is superior to the humangear – it has serrations of sorts that help with sawing and guiding the edge through food. I much prefer this edge for basic cutting jobs while feeding myself.

The UCO Utility Spork – my daily driver in the office

It does not feel as reliable as the humangear though. There is more flex and the plastic feels thinner. I could easily see the humangear winning torture tests. But if you’re not looking for the strongest utensil, just one that works well, you can’t go wrong with the UCO Utility Spork. I bring my UCO into the office to eat my cereal, yogurt, salads, etc. and it works great. Since it performs better, I prefer it over the humangear for the purpose. We also keep these in our pool picnic kit. So I wouldn’t recommend these for backpacking or for your SHTF kit, but they are a great everyday utensil.

This spork is also slightly longer than the humangear – though not quite long enough to keep your knuckles clean from backpacker meals. It wins out in length, but I wouldn’t go as far as recommending it for backpacking. Keep it relegated to car camping, picnics, and meals at work. If you have a loved one who is returning to the office after teleworking for years, this is a great gift idea for a sendoff – they’ll be eating in style in their work break room.

Light My Fire Tritan Spork

This was my first introduction to the world of sporks for camping. I think we got some as part of a wedding gift. These work as they are intended, and don’t vary wildly in function over the two sporks above.

My (broken) Light My Fire Tritan Spork

However, my experience indicates that this is the weakest variety. I had a fork tine break on one and the spork break in half on the other.

Easily broken! Do not buy

These also feel awkwardly large to use, so I don’t really enjoy them. They’ve since been relegated to backup utensils in my car camping box – yes, even though they’re broken. I would not recommend the Light My Fire Tritan Spork over either the humangear GoBites Uno or the UCO Utility Spork.

TiTo Titanium Long Handle Spork

This is the one true spork in this list. As such, it does not really have a purposeful cutting design – it’s all spoon and fork. Long handle utensils are all the rage nowadays in the backpacking community because they’re long enough to keep your hands clean while eating from a rehydrated meal bag. The TiTo Titanium Long Handle Spork is probably the most affordable model on the market, at least for titanium. This spork is great – it scoops and grabs food. The tongs aren’t the sharpest but I use some leverage with the bag and I maximize my spoonage to make it work.

However this spork feels flimsy. Despite being titanium, the metal is really thin – I suppose to keep weight down. The humangear GoBites Uno in titanium feels much more durable. This could easily get bent if you pack it wrong, step on it, or lift something heavy with it – so user beware! But if you baby it you’ve got a great long utensil for backpacking.

Camping sporks length alongside a backpacker meal
You can see where the length comes into play (hold the jokes) alongside a backpacker meal. Length is not as much of an issue car camping.

Because of its drawbacks in durability and weak prongs, I would not recommend this except for backpacking. In which case I would highly recommend it. If you’re car camping, you have no need for this you can go with something cheaper and/or sturdier like either the humangear GoBites Uno or the UCO Utility Spork. But if you’re looking for a good single utensil for backpacking, the TiTo Titanium Long Handle Spork is it. It even comes with a neat carrying case, which I don’t really plan to use but it’s a cool option.

Conclusion

For car camping, I think it’s a toss up between the humangear GoBites Uno and the UCO Utility Spork. Both have the same functions. The humangear feels slightly more durable – especially if you go titanium. And the UCO has a little extra length and sharper fork prongs. You really can’t go wrong with either one. I personally use the humangear for camping and the UCO for the office.

For backpacking, I recommend the TiTo Titanium Long Handle Spork. There are probably better long handle sporks out there but they probably cost more and I have no experience with them. I’ve had no issues with my TiTo. Just be careful not to bend it – despite being titanium it feels fragile. If you plan to live like complete hiker trash and eat right from the bag, you’ve gotta have this spork.

Do not get the Light My Fire Tritan Spork – it sucks.
